CRS countries 2026: who reports automatically to your home country?

The CRS is the world's most important instrument for the automatic transmission of account data between tax authorities. Whoever holds an account abroad should understand how it works.

What is the CRS?

The Common Reporting Standard (CRS) is an international standard developed by the OECD for the automatic exchange of financial information between tax authorities. It was adopted in 2014 and has been in force since 2017. Over 120 countries have committed to reporting their clients' account data annually to the relevant home authorities.

What is reported: name, address, tax identification number, date of birth, account number, year-end balance, interest, dividends and proceeds of sales. The report happens automatically, without you learning of it or consenting.

Who is affected?

Everyone who holds an account at a bank in a CRS member country while being tax-resident in another CRS member country. As a UK or Nordic taxpayer, all your accounts in CRS countries are reported automatically to your home tax authority, whether France, Switzerland, Singapore or Hong Kong.

Singapore, Hong Kong, Mauritius, Switzerland, Panama, Belize, Thailand, Armenia and Georgia are CRS members; accounts there fall under the reporting framework. Georgia has been an official member since 2024, but its banks in practice collect neither proof of address nor tax IDs, and a robust data flow to home authorities has not been observable to date; Armenia shows the same constellation, officially acceded with no practically effective flow observed. Serbia, the Philippines, Zanzibar, Gambia, Sierra Leone, North Macedonia, Puerto Rico and the USA are not CRS members; accounts there are not reported automatically. Vanuatu has been a CRS member since 2018 and exchanges account data automatically with over 80 jurisdictions.

Non-CRS countries: what does that mean?

An account in a non-CRS country is not reported automatically to your home tax authority. That does not mean you need not declare it. You remain obliged to declare foreign accounts in your tax return; the difference is that you are responsible for the reporting yourself, not the bank.

Note: failing to declare a foreign account in your tax return is tax evasion. We always recommend involving a tax adviser and declaring all foreign accounts correctly.
